Next year’s SONAR FESTIVAL is now set for June 18-20 in Barcelona, with secondary legs of the fest hitting February in Stockholm and Reykjavik, Iceland, and March in Copenhagen. The Barcelona edition of the fest – the main destination of many a summer-travelling music fan – will include headliners The Chemical Brothers, with additional sets from the likes of Tourist, Kindness, Daniel Avery, and Helena Hauff on the schedule.

NEW ORDER have signed with Mute Records for what will be their 10th studio album, on which they’ll team up with label founder Daniel Miller. There were rumours for a while that the band would also be collaborating with LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy, but those rumours have been squashed at least for now, so it remains to be seen who will be on production duties. What we do know is that frontman Bernard Sumner has confirmed this next collection of tracks will be even more synth/dance-focused than previous efforts.

Overall album sales may be slumping, but VINYL RECORDS were a big winner this past year, with vinyl pressing plants working overtime as the retro audio format is becoming revitalized thanks to less personalized digital formats. Considered as having a warmer sound, and obviously being more tangible, “real” objects, vinyl record sales have tripled over the past five years, and now make up 3.5 percent of overall music sales – ten years ago, only .2 percent of music sold was on vinyl. Digital downloads and CDs still make up the top two methods of music purchases.

PYXIS POINTS | R.E.M. and IRS Records are dropping a special boxed collection of vinyl seven-inch singles from the band, complete with special artwork that replicates the original sleeves. The set, called 7IN-83-88, includes tracks “Finest Worksong” and “Time After Time (Live)” | Folk legend Bob Dylan has been selected as the 2015 MusiCares Person of the year, and will be honored for same on February 5 by Beck, Norah Jones, Jack White, and The Black Keys | And Sam Smith is giving fans a peek behind the scenes with his new music video for his track “Restart,” which features Duran Duran collaborator Nile Rodgers in a cameo appearance. – Kristi Kates
